Press release: Blockchain and traceability: the new digital frontier of the “Second Life Plastic” certification

With the publication of the new edition of the Regulations for Second-Life Plastic Certification, IPPR – the Institute for the Promotion of Recycled Plastics – is introducing a significant innovation in line with recent regulatory developments and the growing need for transparency and traceability in environmental reporting. The new Regulation recognises the possibility, on a voluntary basis, of adopting digital tools to track materials throughout all stages of the supply chain: from the sorting of plastic waste, through its conversion into secondary raw materials, to the production of the final product.

PSV certification now includes the use of blockchain-based technologies, which enable information to be recorded in an immutable manner, thereby guaranteeing its integrity, authenticity and certified date. In this context, blockchain acts as a digital notarial register, conferring legal validity on the recorded data and thereby enhancing the reliability of the entire supply chain.

Development of the Second Life Plastics Regulation

Plastica Seconda Vita is an accredited environmental certification scheme for recycled content and by-products. Created to meet the need to ensure that recycled materials can be traced and identified, it was the first Italian and European label dedicated to recycled plastic, certifying the percentage of recycled content in materials and products. The scheme is promoted by IPPR, founded in 2004 by Unionplast, PlasticsEurope Italia and Corepla, with the aim of promoting the circular economy in the recycled plastics sector and facilitating dialogue between businesses and the public sector.

Now, with the introduction of blockchain technology, PSV is also paving the way for the Digital Product Passport (DPP), a key tool for improving the transparency and circularity of plastics. This will enable the collection, updating and sharing of certified information on the composition, origin and regulatory compliance of materials, making this information accessible to all stakeholders in the supply chain.

Statement by the IPPR President

Plastica Seconda Vita was the first certification scheme dedicated to recycled plastics in Europe, over twenty years ago. Today, we are proud to be the first organisation to recognise and promote the use of innovative digital technologies to enhance traceability and transparency throughout the plastics value chain,” says Libero Cantarella, President of IPPR.
